ENCOURAGING THE ALABAMA ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE CONTROL BOARD TO CLOSE STATE LIQUOR STORES ON THE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., STATE HOLIDAY.

WHEREAS, Section 1-3-8 of the Code of Alabama 1975, designates the third Monday in January as a state holiday in honor of the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., and this date is also celebrated as a holiday by the federal government, as well as many private concerns; and

WHEREAS, in designating this legal public holiday, this legislative body wished to recognize in a meaningful and continuing manner the paramount contributions of Dr. King to our state, as well as our nation; and

WHEREAS, we believe that to fully demonstrate the significance of this holiday designation it is necessary that state government endeavor to close on this date as many state offices as possible; moreover, in support of this reasoning we find it is appropriate to afford employees of our state the opportunity to participate in the celebration of this meaningful day; and

WHEREAS, based upon the foregoing, we find it is appropriate that the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board close all state liquor stores on the King Holiday; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board is encouraged to take appropriate action to ensure that all state liquor stores are closed on the state holiday celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. A copy of this resolution shall be forwarded to the board so that it may know of our interest and expectations regarding this matter.
