WHEREAS, we recognize with great pride and appreciation the outstanding professional achievements of Mr. H.L. "Dick" Jones with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama upon his retirement on January 31, 2003; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jones began his impressive career with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama in 1969 when he assumed the position of Manager of the Montgomery Sales Office of Blue Cross; he has served as Director of Marketing, Vice President of Sales, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Chief Marketing Officer, Executive Vice President, and President and Chief Operating Officer; in July 1998, Mr. Jones became Chief Executive Officer, a position he held until his retirement; and

WHEREAS, thanks to the tireless effort and constant inspiration of Mr. Jones, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama has enjoyed tremendous success in the marketplace, becoming the leader of the health care industry and a pillar of the community; under his guidance, the company has pioneered family-friendly programs and innovative practices that make Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama one of the most sought-after employers of Alabama; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Mr. Jones, the Blue Cross Medical Information Network, InfoSolutions, has experienced growth and mainstream acceptance; he has supported the development of disease management programs such as Care Management, and was named the 2000 Outstanding Sales and Marketing Executive by the Sales and Marketing Executives of Birmingham, Alabama; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jones currently serves on the Board of Directors of United Way of Central Alabama, the Birmingham Metropolitan Development Board, the Bryant-Jordan Foundation, and the Board of Trustees for Alabama Independent Colleges; he is on the University of Alabama at Birmingham's School of Business Advisory Board, the Boy Scouts of America's Executive Board, and is involved with many other community programs; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That in recognition of Mr. H.L. "Dick" Jones' outstanding professional achievements and upon his retirement on January 31, 2003, sincere tribute is herein expressed, and it is further directed that a copy of this resolution be presented to him with highest praise and honor.
