MOURNING THE DEATH OF MRS. CAROLINE MARSHALL DRAUGHON OF AUBURN, ALABAMA.

WHEREAS, recorded with a sense of deep sorrow and loss is the death of Mrs. Caroline Marshall Draughon of Auburn, Alabama, on January 7, 2005, at the age of 94 years; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Caroline Draughon was born to Harry Eugene and Mary Augusta Barnes Marshall in Orrville, Dallas County, Alabama, in 1910; she graduated from Selma High School, where one of her classmates was Ralph "Shug" Jordan, whom her future husband would one day hire as Auburn's football coach; she was captain of the swim team and president of the freshman class at Huntingdon College and graduated in 1931; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Draughon married the late Ralph B. Draughon and they moved to Auburn when he accepted a position as a junior member of the Auburn History Department; he was named acting president of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1947, President the next year, and they remained in the president's home until his retirement in 1965; and

WHEREAS, a wonderful friend and adviser to large numbers of students and faculty, Mrs. Draughon created the Campus Club that sponsors faculty receptions, dances, and other projects and on its 50th anniversary, the Caroline Draughon Endowed Scholarship Fund was initiated; she also organized the Dame's Club for working wives who were helping their husbands through school and was honored with the naming of the married students' apartment complex, the Caroline Draughon Village; and

WHEREAS, a devoted sports enthusiast, member of Chapter A of P.E.O., and United Daughters of the Confederacy, Caroline Draughon was honored with the Pam Sheffield Award as an outstanding woman of Auburn; and

WHEREAS, left to cherish the memory of Mrs. Caroline Draughon are her daughter, Ann (Tom) Cousins; son, Ralph B. Draughon, Jr.; grandchildren, Lillian Cousins (Greg) Giornelli and Thomas Grady Cousins, Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Jane Adelaide, Ann Caroline, Jillian Laning, and Thomas Raymond Giornelli; now therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That in sadness and regret the death of Mrs. Caroline Marshall Draughon of Auburn, Alabama, is hereby recorded, and sincerest sympathy is extended to her family for whom a copy of this resolution shall be provided.
