HONORING THE SERVICE OF SHERIFF'S DEPUTY THOMAS ROBERT LEWIS.
WHEREAS, it is with great sadness and great respect that we recognize the service of Deputy Thomas Robert Lewis of the Madison County Sheriff's Department who lost his life as the result of a tragic encounter on November 1, 1994; and
WHEREAS, on that date, Deputy Lewis along with Deputy Billy Joe Thrower was called to Steakley Road to assist in serving mental commitment documents to David Drew Zmyewski who had a history of mental problems and was suspected of being capable of violence; and
WHEREAS, Deputies Lewis and Thrower approached the front door while Deputies Clay Westrope and Kevin Lester were posted to the rear; on identifying themselves, Deputies Lewis and Thrower were assaulted with gunfire as the subject exited the residence and continued firing multiple rounds; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Lewis was fatally wounded while Deputy Thrower, although severely injured, was able to return fire, delivering a fatal shot to the subject; Deputy Thrower died of his injuries on September 17, 1995; and
WHEREAS, during what should have been a routine task in the line of duty, Deputies Lewis and Thrower followed regulations and acted with bravery and judgment; their senseless and tragic deaths cannot be redeemed, but their courage and sacrifice may be honored by recognizing their commitment to the citizens of Madison County and their desire to heed the highest calling of a law enforcement officer, to serve and protect; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we respectfully honor the service of the late Deputy Thomas Robert Lewis of the Madison County Sheriff's Department, and by copy of this resolution prepared in tribute, we commend his memory to the citizens of Alabama.
