Representative William Thigpen was elected in 1998 and his serving his third term in the Alabama House of Representatives. His district includes all of Fayette and Lamar counties and part of Tuscaloosa County.

He was born on December 2, 1940. Originally from Greenville, Representative Thigpen received his B.S. from Troy State University in 1964 while attending school on a basketball scholarship.

Upon moving to Fayette in 1969, Representative Thigpen was a successful businessman for 36 years. Responsible for creating a number of jobs in the Fayette area, he was named Man of the Year for Fayette in 1995.

A strong supporter of the National Guard and military, Representative Thigpen served in the Alabama Army National Guard from 1958 until 1986 when he retired with the rank of major. During that time, he served as commander of the Fayette Unit for seven years.

Representative Thigpen has been married for more than 40 years to Betty Whitstine Thigpen, who served as president of the Alabama Legislative Club, an organization made up of spouses of legislators. They have three children and seven grandchildren.

In addition to his House Standing Committee Assignments, Representative Thigpen is a member of the Joint Legislative Committee on Energy, the Southern States Energy Board, and The Energy Council.
