Representative Anthony "Alann" Johnson was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives on April 1, 2014 to fill a vacancy in the District 53 seat.

Representative Johnson is a graduate of Talladega College completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in History Pre-Law, and a Master’s of Divinity degree in Theology from the Morehouse School of Religion at ITC.

Additionally, he is a graduate of Emory University having completed a Resident Chaplaincy in Pastoral Education earning five-units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). Representative Johnson was licensed to preach on August 25, 1996.

He was licensed and ordained by his Grandfather the late Rev. Dr. Nelson Henry Smith Jr. a renown local, national and international civil rights icon, Past Progressive National Baptist Convention President and Pastor of New Pilgrim Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama for 53 years.

His God-Uncle and Mentor Rev. Dr. T. DeWitt Smith, Jr. is the Immediate Past President of the Progressive National Baptist Convention.

A student of Martin Luther, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Walter Rauschenbusch, Representative Johnson passionately embraces “social gospel” theology. At ITC, he gained an ecumenical understanding of the concept of “public theologian.”

Representative Johnson is affiliated with a large number of civic organizations, among them; Progressive National Baptist Convention, National Baptist Convention, Rainbow Push, SCLC, NAACP, Urban League, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Birmingham Public Schools.

He has served on the boards of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School Foundation, Birmingham Library Board, and is Past President of the Magic City Kiwanis Club.

Prior to his election to the Alabama House of Representatives, Representative Johnson served as a legislative assistant in the Florida House of Representatives.  He also served as a regional campaign organizer for President Obama.
