COMMENDING JOHN MCMILLAN, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE ALABAMA FORESTRY ASSOCIATION, UPON HIS OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP IN PROMOTING FORESTRY.
WHEREAS, it is with highest praise that we commend John McMillan, Executive Vice President of the Alabama Forestry Association, upon his outstanding leadership in promoting forestry and upon his retirement; and
WHEREAS, a native of Stockton, John McMillan grew up working on his uncle's farm and in his father's sawmill; he graduated from Baldwin County High School and Rhodes College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics; and
WHEREAS, after college, John McMillan worked at the sawmill for the next 20 years and was very active in Stockton, Bay Minette, and Baldwin County civic and community affairs; and
WHEREAS, in 1969, Governor Albert Brewer appointed John McMillan to the Baldwin County Commission where he served from 1972 to 1974; he was elected State Representative in 1974 and 1978; while in the House, his primary service was on the State Administration Committee, and the Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resources Committee which he chaired; during his tenure in the House, he was recognized as the 1976 and 1979 Alabama Wildlife Federation Legislative Conservationist of the Year; and
WHEREAS, in 1980, Governor Fob James appointed John McMillan Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, where he played major roles in rebuilding the Gulf State Park after Hurricane Frederick, passage of significant legislation protecting Alabama's wildlife and fisheries resources, and the $449 million off shore oil and gas lease sale which led to the establishment of the Alabama Trust Fund; and
WHEREAS, in January 1983, John McMillan became Administrative Vice President of the Alabama Forestry Association and Executive Vice President in May 1985; and
WHEREAS, John McMillan is active in numerous forestry and business organizations including the Alabama Forestry Council, Alabama Forestry Planning Committee, Alabama Council of Association Executives, and Alabama Civil Justice Reform Committee; and he is a member of numerous professional and related organizations; and
WHEREAS, John McMillan serves on the University of South Alabama Foundation Board; was appointed by Governor Fob James and by Governor Bob Riley to serve on the State of Alabama's Personnel Board; Auburn University President's Commission on Agriculture; and was appointed to Governor Riley's Commission on Efficiency, Consolidation, and Funding; and
WHEREAS, John McMillan and his wife of 40 years, Kathryn, have two sons; Murphy (Beth) and William; and they are grandparents of El and John; John and Kathryn McMillan are members of the Stockton Presbyterian Church where he has served as Deacon and Elder; and
WHEREAS, at the Alabama Forestry Association Mid-Winter Meeting February 24-25, 2006, John McMillan will be honored for his past 23 years promoting Alabama Forestry for he has indeed earned the admiration and respect of all those who are associated with him; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That John McMillan is hereby recognized and honored for his leadership in promoting forestry and upon his retirement and a copy of this resolution shall be presented to him with sincere best wishes for all his future endeavors.
