Senator Denton, born on August 13, 1938, in Colbert County, is serving his eighth term in the Senate and is a Democrat. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Alabama. He and his wife, Barbara, have three children and three grandchildren. He is a member of the Church of Christ and enjoys music and the arts.

As the longest serving Member, and pursuant to Senate Rule 47(b), Senator Denton is Dean of the Senate.
