Senator French, a Republican, is serving his third term in the Senate . He was born May 22, 1962, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Personnel and Industrial Relations from Auburn University. Senator French is a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, where he serves on the Church's Administrative Council. He is married to the former Elizabeth “Betsy” Orcutt of Birmingham. They have four daughters: Alex, Sally, Lizzie and Virginia.

Senator French is an investment and insurance specialist, concentrating in the areas of estate planning, asset protection, and wealth creation. He holds a number of professional licenses issued by the National Association of Securities Dealers, and those issued by the State of Alabama's Department of Insurance. Those designations include: Series 7 and Series 63 brokerage licenses, life insurance, health insurance, and property and casualty insurance licenses.

Senator French has an extensive background in Republican politics, both in Alabama and nationally. Senator French served as Director of the Alabama Republican Party, 1988-1991. He was subsequently hired by the Republican National Committee as one of seven Regional Political Directors, serving in that capacity until Spring, 1992. He was then hired as Alabama campaign manager for the Bush/Quayle '92 campaign. After the 1992 election cycle, Senator French established a political consulting company, where he worked on numerous legislative, judicial and federal campaigns before retiring upon his election to the Alabama Senate in 1998.

Senator French served as the Organizational Chairman for the George W. Bush for President Campaign in 2000, and the 6th Congressional District chairman for the Bush/Cheney '04 campaign.

Senator French serves on the Alabama Commission on Infrastructure and SMART Governing Legislative Task Force.

Among the awards presented to Senator French during his tenure as a State Senator are the following: 2000 Statesmanship Award; 2001 Outstanding Conservative Senator Award; 2002 Lawmaker of the Year, awarded by the Alabama Independent Insurance Agents. He is an alumnus of the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL). Senator French is also an honorary Fellow and board member of the Policy Exchange Foundation.

By appointment of the Lieutenant Governor, Senator French serves as a member of the Energy Council and the Joint Legislative Transportation Committee.
