Senator Mitchell, born on September 4, 1940, in Montgomery, is serving his seventh term in the Senate. He received his B.S. degree from Auburn University and his J.D. degree from the University of Alabama. He is Dean Emeritus of Jones School of Law. Senator Mitchell and his wife, Rosalind, are the parents of three children: Maury, Shelly, and Wendy. He is a Democrat and a member of the Church of Christ.

Pursuant to Rule 47(e), Senator Mitchell was appointed Deputy President Pro Tempore on January 16, 2007. Under the provisions of Rule 47(e), Senator Mitchell, as Deputy President Pro Tempore, is a voting member of all Senate Standing Committees, with the exception of the local legislation committees.
